Mr Alistair Boyce has contributed services to education, particularly in the Picton community, for more than 38 years. He became a teacher in 1972 and retired as Deputy Principal at Queen Charlotte College in Picton in 2013. He was a participant in 1982 in the OECD Centre for Educational Research and Innovation’s Pacific Circle Project presentation in 1982. Highly regarded for his caring and professional attitude, he has had an impact on Picton and the wider community for his teaching, mentoring and encouragement of students. He was an advocate of the children’s whanau and a support to staff in need. He has been heavily involved in the school’s extra-curricular events, supervising every social event as the Social Club Chair and the swimming pool each lunchtime. He has run extra tutorials for students, provided crisis support for students or their family members and is associated with the local marae. He has also coached and managed rugby teams, junior girls’ hockey, learn to swim programmes, rowing crews, water polo and girls’ netball. Mr Boyce acted as Examiner for Royal Lifesaving Awards, and worked as property manager for the school drama and musical productions among many other supervisory activities.

Ian Cameron is involved with a number of community organisations in the Marlborough area. Mr Cameron, as Registrar of the Blenheim District Court, promoted the idea of a Community Law Centre and initiated public meetings in 1993 that led to the establishment of the Marlborough Community Law Centre (MCLC) in 1996. He was appointed to the MCLC Board in 2010 and served as Secretary for two years. He has served as Chairman of the Board since 2012. He is a member of the Marlborough Justices of the Peace Association’s Council. He serves on the Committee for the Community Organisations Grants Scheme for the upper South Island. He is Secretary and Treasurer of the Havelock Lions Club and is on the Board of Trustees for the Lions Earthquake Committee. He was on the steering committee for the Havelock Community Gardens Scheme and has managed the Gardens since inception, organising volunteers and distributing produce to the community. He is Secretary of Havelock Theatre Inc and is on the Committee of the Havelock Museum. He has been involved with St Marks Alcohol and Drug Residential Treatment Centre for 15 years as a Board member, and former Chairperson of St Marks Society.

John Orchard has contributed to the preservation of Marlborough District heritage for more than 30 years. Mr Orchard has been Head Teacher for the Marlborough Heritage Education Unit for the past fourteen years. He has run historical tours for the Department of Conservation, the Marlborough Historical Society and the Historic Places Trust. He has been a member of the Marlborough Historical Society for more than 30 years. He has helped restore historic buildings throughout the district, including the Molesworth Cottage and the Cob Cottage at Riverlands. He is a committee member of the Edwin Fox Society and the Marlborough Historic Places Trust. He organised the construction of replica bunks and stowage areas for the Edwin Fox to provide visitors an interactive experience of life on a cramped immigrant ship. He has served 29 years as President of the Blenheim Riverside Railway Society, helping to build the railway from Brayshaw Heritage Park to central Blenheim and Omaka. Mr Orchard has also served as President of Brayshaw Heritage Park Administrators and provided outdoor education and on-site history courses for Marlborough Boys’ College. US camps a good option for graduates Continued from page 1 “It was a very thorough process,” explained Paula, who applied online, filled out numerous forms and went through several interview stages before being declared successful. “We had to have Skype interviews with the directors and had to make videos of ourselves, but it was a lot of fun,” she said. Paula, 18, is heading to Florida

for 10 weeks to be a counsellor at a day camp, where she will conduct a range of sporting activities for children aged six to 12. Meanwhile Hannah, also 18, is off to a scout camp in Colorado where she will lead six to 17-year-olds on activites like tramping, ropes courses and archery. The teenagers paid their application fees and flights but will get free food

and accommodation plus an allowance during their work placements. Both were nervous prior to leaving, as they had not done any solo international travel. But they were looking forward to the experience and to the 30 days they each get to explore the US once their placement is over. Paula says the experience is something other teenagers should consider

if they are looking to do something meaningful during their gap year. CCUSA New Zealand director Liz Andrews encouraged more Marlburians to apply. “Participants from Blenheim always seem to have the perfect skill set for us, usually having grown up doing the skills camps are hiring for and being acquainted with the ‘outdoorsy’ lifestyle,” she said.

Boys and their toys By Kristy Martin The skies above Ara vineyard were buzzing during the Blenheim Model Aero Club’s annual fly-in at the weekend. The two-day event featured “lots of different aspects of modelling, from chuck gliders to model turbine jets,” said club secretary-treasurer Murray Herd. Numbers were down on last year’s fly-in, with 15 registered pilots on Saturday, some of whom came from Nelson and Christchurch for the event. Allan Knox of the Blenheim Model Aero Club flew his vintage power model ‘scram’, a US-designed plane from 1938. Mr Knox, who has been building model planes for 52 years, and fellow club member Peter Deacon were also testing a variometer, which measures the rate and change in altitude of an aircraft. Spectators enjoyed watching Graham Smithson’s model de Havilland Vampire take to the skies. Mr Smithson, from Nelson, built the one-fifth scale jet turbine himself. The fly-in event concluded on Sunday.

TWO INJURED IN CRASH A woman and two children were taken to hospital after a car crash on Saturday morning. Two ambulances attended the single vehicle crash on Northbank Road, which saw a woman aged in her late 30’s suffer a head injury. A seven-year-old girl received a seatbelt contusion and a three-yearold girl who was also a passenger was not injured. All three were taken to Wairau Hospital.

A man who cut his face with an angle grinder was airlifted to hospital from D’Urville Island in the Sounds on Sunday. The 46-year-old Nelson man was doing some working activity when the accident happened in the evening. The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter landed on the shore line at Paddys Bay and the man was assessed before being flown to Nelson Hospital in a stable condition.

Hospital report released for discussion An independent review into Wairau and Nelson hospitals has recommended around-the-clock acute and elective services across the two locations, however the district health board says this does not mean identical services will be able to be provided on both sites. The independent report prepared for Nelson Marlborough DHB was endorsed by the board for the purpose of discussing with staff and the wider community. “The report does not advocate radical revolution but an evolution of systems that bring Marlborough and Nelson services closer together under ‘one service two sites’, providing equitable access

By Kristy Martin In just three years, the St John health shuttle has driven 142,000 km. This is the equivalent of driving around the equator three and a half times. The Marlborough vehicle, which is used to transport patients to medical appointments from their homes, celebrates three years on the road this

month. So far, it has carried 5614 patients who are financially disadvantaged or who have no other means of travel. The shuttle has a team of 16 drivers, who say it has been a delight to help the disadvantaged in the community when they are in need of medical treatment.

Local sparks search An 85-year-old Blenheim man has made international headlines after he activated an emergency locator beacon when he became stuck in the mud while searching for gold in the USA. The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) was alerted to the New Zealand-registered personal locator beacon after it was activated on Friday morning, despite it being on the other side of the world. RCCNZ senior search and rescue officer Mike Roberts said they contacted authorities in California after receiving information about the beacon’s owner. “Because the beacon was registered we were able to quickly confirm with the man’s emergency contact, his son,

that he was in California, and contact the State’s Office of Emergency Services in the United States who confirmed they had also picked up the beacon and were coordinating a response. “We were able to confirm that the man was fit and active with no known medical condition, and all of this was passed to the Californian OES. “Their rescue personnel located the man 31km east of Paradise, California, around 2pm. He was uninjured but his vehicle was firmly stuck in mud.” Rescuers assisted the Kiwi man in freeing his vehicle. Mr Roberts said the incident showed the benefit of carrying a registered beacon.

Budget blunders Dear Ed, I thought it prudent to introduce some facts about National’s recent Budget – the “fudge-it Budget”, with its paper thin, smoke and mirrors surplus. National have managed to scrape into surplus by keeping ACC levies $122m higher than they need to be (ACC’s future liabilities are already more than 100% funded), disguising $375m of NZTA (transport) spending as a zero interest loan and reducing the spend on the Canterbury rebuild’s local infrastructure by $560m. Additionally, an effective cut of $40m to the New Zealand Police was made.

The Budget forecasts growth to deteriorate and halve over the next four years. The current account deficit is forecast to worsen – New Zealand will continue under National to spend more offshore than we make, which means we are going backwards – not to mention the $56b worth of debt National has slapped on the country’s credit card. Compare this to Labour – the Labour Government ran a surplus every year it was in office, paid net core crown debt down to zero and invested heavily in New Zealand’s future. Corey Hebberd

Steaking his claim In an age where supermarkets reign and small, locally owned businesses are a dying breed, Meaters of Marlborough is thriving. Butcher Mike Newman tells Kristy Martin the secrets of his success.

Mike Newman has worked in the same building for 38 years. He started his butchery apprenticeship at 16 in a small retail shop on Maxwell Road known as Snowpack Meat Market. Thirty-eight years on, he is now the owner of the building and the business, Meaters of Marlborough. “There’s not too many of us left now,” Mike says of butcher shops. Meaters’ stock comes from Harris Meats in Cheviot. “They became our supplier within six weeks of our abattoir (Master Butchers Marlborough) closing. “Owner Bryan Harris and I have developed a great relationship and we’re guaranteed the best stock.” Mike says when MBM closed down 10 years ago, he was forced to buy his own truck

w h i c h now does a we ek ly pick-up of six tonnes of meat. “If we don’t h ave b e t t e r meat consistently, then we’ve got no business. “It was a huge thing for me to do, financially, but I had confidence in the industry and my banker enjoyed a good steak,” he laughs. The meat arrives at the shop in carcass form – whole lambs and pigs and quartered beef. Mike and his team hang it up to age and cut it to their own requirements. The winning recipe for Meaters has been its combination of using traditional butchery techniques, while at the same time keeping up with modern trends and, of course, the fresh quality meat. And boy, do Marlburians love their meat. “Everyone still enjoys the family roast, but it doesn’t happen every week like it used to,” Mike says. “We have up to 80 different meats available to our customers every day.” This includes everything from steaks and sausages to kebabs, pastries and schnitzels.

Meaters’ staff also make their own bacon and small goods, which is a huge strength for the business. “We have a variety of meats to cater for the many different ethnic groups now in Marlborough,” Mike says. “We’ve got a different culture in Blenheim now, thanks to the wine industry, and I like to think there is nothing we can’t get or do.” Mike is a ‘born and bred’ Marlburian who grew up on a rural property with six siblings. He always wanted his own farm but it was his mother’s desire to see him become a tradesman that steered Mike toward the meat industry. He was straight out of school when he started his butchery apprenticeship under the late Alan Burr (“a great man”). “If I was going to buy a butchery business this was the one that was going to last,” Mike explains. It was a gamble because, at that time, other outlets were closing down. But it paid off. The business now employs 16 staff, including two apprentices, one being Mike’s son, Kieran. Mike works 12-hour weekdays and 10 hours on Saturdays. “I try to keep out of there on a Sunday but it doesn’t always happen,” he chuckles. Mike says his business has outgrown its premises and he is now considering knocking down the shop and building a new one.

The purpose-built retail and processing facility would not only stock meat but local wine and breads too. “To come to Meaters it has to be an experience. “We have to provide advice, a bit of banter and a professional, friendly service.” Mike is also very big on supporting local charities, fundraisers and community groups and has given away countless piles of meat to aid many worthy causes. He says this is his way of giving back to the community. “Marlborough has been good to me. “I spend a lot of time in the shop and don’t get to go out and do as many community things as I would like, so this is my way of giving back. “Local businesses need to put it back because it is the local people that keep the business going.”

Roundabout work begins Work has begun on a new roundabout at the corner of Boyce Street and Middle Renwick Road in Springlands. Marlborough Roads is asking drivers to be patient as delays are expected. The work is part of a $1.4 million project that will see two roundabouts built on Middle Renwick Road (SH6), which has experienced significant traffic increases with the development of Pak n’ Save and Bunnings at Westwood. The second roundabout will be constructed at the Battys Road intersection. Marlborough Roads is also currently upgrading the Weld Street and Stephenson Street intersection in order to improve safety. Highway manager Frank Porter said the work includes replacing the kerb and channel and upgrading the footpath on the eastern side of Weld Street, from Stephenson Street to Muller Road. “When the work is complete there will be no confusion as to give-way priorities which will make this intersection safer,” he said. ‘Extinct’ animal found alive in Sounds A marine animal thought to have been extinct for four million years has been found alive and well and living near in the Queen Charlotte Sound. Called Protulophila, this new ‘living fossil’ forms a network of tiny holes in the chalky tubes of marine worms called serpulids. Fossil examples were discovered this year by a group of scientists including NIWA marine biologist Dr Dennis Gordon, Dr Paul Taylor of London’s Natural History Museum and Drs Lee Hsiang Liow, Kjetil Voje and Seabourne Rust of the University of Oslo. Protulophila was thought to have been extinct for four million years following a long geological history extending back 170 million years into the Middle Jurassic period in Europe.

According to Dr Gordon, living fossils are animals and plants with long geo-

logical histories but which are now rare or uncommon. “Finding living Protulophila is a rare example of how knowledge of fossils has led to the discovery of living biodiversity,” he said. “It’s very exciting. “Our detective work has also suggested the possibility that Protulophila may be the missing polyp stage of a hydroid in which only the tiny planktonic jellyfish stage is known. “Many hydroid species have a two-stage life cycle and often the two stages have never been matched. “Our discovery may thus mean that we are solving two puzzles at once.” The next step for the scientists will be to collect fresh samples from Queen Charlotte Sound for gene sequencing.

As of yesterday, 23 Grove Road Coffee House is now open on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights, serving desserts, coffees and other hot drinks. Clinton Banks, who co-owns the cafe with wife Tamsin said he wanted to provide a new option for Blenheim. “When Tamsin and I were dating we used to get hot chocolate and desserts in places in Christchurch, and I think Blenheim could use a place like that. “It was one of the ideas we had from the start, but we were so busy we didn’t have a chance to create it.” He said the cafe’s family following would help to create a friendly atmosphere. “It’ll be a non-alcoholic, family-friendly place where you can have date night or family night. “If it works ok we might look to expand it to more nights.” The cafe celebrated its first birthday at the start of May.

Parent and Child Expo When it comes to family entertainment, pregnancy and baby information and products the annual Marlborough Parent and Child Expo is the event not to miss. The Expo will be held this Sunday at the Marlborough Convention Centre from 10am to 2:30pm and promises plenty of information, exciting products, demonstrations as well as a range of services. One exciting new addition to this year’s line up is a competi-

tion where kids nominate their parents to go into the draw to win a voucher for a massage and facial for two, donated by Arthur Devine valued at $460. There will be 48 exhibitors at the Expo ranging from childcare and education providers through to nappies, clothing and baby hand and feet casting. Marlborough Parents Centre’s committee members will also be talking to families about their child birth education and parenting classes available.

A number of demonstrations will be held throughout the day including driveway safety, car seat safety and kids dance, while Pom Pom the Clown, Harold the Giraffe, face painters and a bouncy castle will provide fun for the children. Because there will be a huge array of products for sale, special Expo offers and CPR Coffee . People are encouraged to bring along cash as Eftpos can’t be guaranteed.

Rowing badge unearthed Picton police are trying to locate the owner of a silver rowing badge (pictured) found on the roadside earlier this month. Watchhouse officer Mary Cooper said the item was quite dirty when it was found by a member of the public. “When the finder cleaned it up a lovely badge was discovered,” she said. More doctors on staff The Ministry of Health says record numbers of doctors and nurses are at the bedside caring for patients in public hospitals in Nelson/Marlborough. As of March 31 this year, there were 177 doctors and 547 nurses employed by Nelson/Marlborough District Health Board – over 30 more doctors and 40 more nurses than 2008. This includes 20 more senior doctors and 17 more senior nurses. Health Minister Tony Ryall says the number of doctors and nurses working in the public health service continues to grow. “More doctors and nurses means faster treatment and better experiences for patients and their families,” he said.

Call for public sex offender register The Sensible Sentencing Trust is calling on the government to develop a public sex offender register, according to Blenheim woman and SST spokesperson for the prevention of child abuse Nadia Crighton. “It’s clear this is what the NZ public want, people have a right to know who is living in their communities, near their schools and posing a possible threat to their children.” Ms Crighton is pointing to the recent case of Masterton resident Dean Cooper who was jailed for two years and four months in 2008 for possessing pictures and movies of children being sexually abused. He was also fined $5000 in 1999 for trading child sexual abuse images. Information of his whereabouts was made public when fliers and emails were distributed warning local residents. “People want to know this information,” Ms Crighton said. “The fact that Cooper is living near a school is what is making communities angry. “This information needs to be more readily available, and schools should be notified when people such as this are living close by.”

Scarf Expo set for Sunday By Celeste Lodewyk “One can never have too many scarves.” This was the message from Marlborough Creative Fibre Guild president Nancy Taylor who is one of many members that will be displaying their handcrafted creations for the public next week. The Guild is hosting its annual Scarf Expo from June 8 - 14 and has over 200 scarves for the expo which will also be for sale. What makes this expo unique is that each of the scarves are one-off creations and made from a variety of skillsets, including felters, weavers, spinners and knitters. The colours, techniques, patterns and styles are what make the expo vibrant and interesting, and

the community is encouraged to go along and see it for themselves. Throughout the expo there will also be demonstrations and workshops where people can see and experience the crafts for themselves and talk to members. It will be held at 22 Scott Street where out front will be a tree decorated in various types of scarves. Guild members want to share their knowledge so that these fibre skills carry on from generation to generation, so anyone would like to find out more they can visit the expo. The Marlborough Creative Fibre Guild has 70 local members and meets weekly and monthly at its rooms located at Brayshaw Park.

There were also calls for the database to not only contain information about child-sex offenders but to include those found guilty of serious violent and sexual offending, she said. “The public model works overseas and there is no reason why it couldn’t and shouldn’t work in NZ.”

May 2014 was drier, sunnier and warmer than average, according to data collected at the Blenheim Meteorological station. Rainfall for the month was well down on last year’s figures, with a total of 16mm received. Rainfall for May 2013 was 94.4 mm. There were 199.1 hours sunshine recorded this May compared with 182.5 last year and 185.4 in 2012.

May 2014 was the sunniest May since 2008, when the month recorded 200.9 hours sunshine.

Blenheim has had 1058.2 hours of sunshine for the five months from January to May, which is only 5.5 hours less than the longterm average. There were two ground frosts recorded in May this year and one air frost, compared with seven grounds frosts last May and one air frost in 2013. The coldest morning of the month was May 27, with an air frost of -0.8°C and a ground frost of -4.7°C.

All hands on deck A competition challenging the region’s youth to design their own skateboards is underway. Board Art 2014 Marlborough, run by the Marlborough Youth Council, is asking youth to submit their designs to the Marlborough Library or the Millenium Art Gallery by Friday, June 27. The entries will be judged, and showcased around the gallery and the CBD as part of an exhibition beginning in September. Youth Council member Jonathan Cash said he hoped the designs would help show Marlbor-

ough’s youth in a positive light. “I believe this project is a great start, and will certainly highlight the artistic talent of youth here in Marlborough. “I can’t wait to see the final result and see the boards all around our community.” Creativity is being encouraged, as the boards do not have to be functional. Marlburians in national touch squads By Adam Poulopoulos Years of hard work have paid off for Blenheim-based touch rugby player Jordy Newman (pictured) after he was named in the New Zealand under-21 men’s squad. Newman, 20, will convene with the rest of the squad in Auckland in October for a training camp. All going well, Newman hopes to make the team to head to Australia for the TransTasman series next January. Newman’s call-up is just one of a number of recent success stories for Marlborough Touch. Te Hauora Campbell has made the New Zealand under-17 mixed and under-19 men’s squads, Pippa Andrews is in the under-19 women’s squad and Jordan Peipi has been named as a New Zealand Development player. Also, Cameron MacDonaldPederson has been named in the referees training squad for

the 2015 Touch World Cup. Newman said he was delighted after he received the call to say he’d made it. “It was a bit of a shock, and I was pretty stoked. It didn’t

Kentucky Derby delight for Don By Adam Poulopoulos The thoroughbred he was there to see may have pulled up lame, but Blenheim-based horse breeder Don Morrison still enjoyed his trip to the Kentucky Derby last month. Don, a horse breeder for about 30 years, spent ten days in the southern state, enough time to take in the 140th running of the race in Louisville. He was encouraged to go over by his old stable hand Eamonn Cleary, a former boarder at Marlborough Boys’ College. Eamonn’s dad, the late Eamon Cleary, owned Clearsky stud farm in Kentucky. One of his horses, New Year’s Day, became favourite for the Derby after winning the Breeders’ Cup last year, but never raced after sustaining a career-ending injury. By that time, Don was committed to his trip, and he said it was worth going to see the race anyway.

“There were about 170,000 people in the crowd. “It’s a bit like the Melbourne Cup for America - a lot of people don’t go for the racing.” He said he put some money on California Chrome, who ended up winning the race. “It paid for my day out anyway!” “I didn’t know anything about the other horses - it was more about the day out really.” During the rest of his 10-day stay in Kentucky, Don also went on a tour of the stud farms. “It’s a lot like Cambridge, but another step up again. “Cambridge has a couple of good farms, but there it was one after another after another. “It was very green when we went there - Kentucky bluegrass of course.” Don also spent time in both Las Vegas and Hawaii before returning home.

The Rarangi Duathlon will take place on Sunday, June 8 from 10am. The event includes a five kilometre run, 20km bike and 2.5km run. Both individuals and teams are encouraged ot turn up on the day.

HARRIERS The Marlborough Harriers’ Thursday run departs from the clubrooms at 6pm. Reflector gear is compulsory, and everyone is welcome to participate. The Saturday pack run departs from Jim and Mary Lissaman’s farm, 423 Haldons Road, Seddon, at 2pm. There is also a children’s run organised, and don’t forget to bring a plate for afternoon tea.
